Covid-19: Some Reflections from a Medical Anthropology Perspective

Presentations and discussion with Dr. Andrea Kaiser-Grolimund and PD. Dr. Piet van Eeuwijk, Anthropology, University of Basel, and students Lucia Flor Gonzalez Fernandez, Annora Mack and Flurin Bossard

If you would like to join the Zoom session, please contact s.burri@unibas.ch.

This presentation builds upon the seminar 'Anthropology in/of Epidemics' and represents a collaborative effort in which Lucia Flor Gonzalez Fernandez, Annora Mack and Flurin Bossard (see below) reflect on Medical Anthropology perspectives on Covid-19 together with Piet van Eeuwijk and Andrea Kaiser-Grolimund. Infectious diseases are historically a well acquainted topic in Medical Anthropology whereas epidemics (and  particularly the newly emerging global infections) and corresponding research constitute a thematic field yet in the making. We shed light on the epidemics-related dimensions in current Medical Anthropology and illuminate as focal point some of the narratives, measures and effects of Covid-19 from a background of different countries and case studies through the lens of selected Medical Anthropology concepts. Covid-19 and potential future directions (in Medical Anthropology) complete this brief excursion into some Medical Anthropology perspectives.

Lucia Flor Gonzalez Fernandez, PhD student in Public Health/Epidemiology, Swiss TPH

Annora Mack, Master student in Epidemiology, Swiss TPH

Flurin Bosshard, Bachelor student in Social Anthropology and Sociology, Unibas
