SUMMARY:Exploring urban environmental futures (research project)
DESCRIPTION:If you would like to join the Zoom session\, please contact s.b
urri@unibas.ch.\\r\\nClimate change and the rising sea level have become p
ressing environmental challenges for cities worldwide. In Cartagena de Ind
ias\, a Colombian port and world heritage city\, climatic threat forces th
e city government to develop policies to mitigate flooding risk\, preserve
urban infrastructure and prepare for the future. These policies have been
gathered in the city’s Plan 4C\, which provides a framework for plannin
g and action to become climate compatible development by 2040. However\, f
rom the perspective of the residents\, flooding risk is not new in a city
where several neighbourhoods are built directly on wetlands. Imagining and
anticipating possible future scenarios are crucial for urban planning\, b
ut also for ordinary citizens dealing with increasing urban complexities i
n their everyday lives.\\r\\nThis presentation draws on recent ethnographi
c research in Cartagena (June/ July 2021) and aims to provide an overview
of the practices\, meanings and policies surrounding the mangrove forests
in the neighbourhood of Olaya Herrera.
