Ambivalent Perceptions: Human Relations, Cultural Subjects and the Interpretation of Colonial Legacies between Colombia, Brazil and Switzerland
Visits by representatives of indigenous “source / creator communities” from Latin America to the museum's collections are always special in terms of their frequency, emotionality and insights gained. This are moments in which, on the one hand, perspectives and positions are discussed and questioned. On the other hand, new knowledge is generated and forms of dialogue and collaboration are tested. In contrast to the prevailing debate, the concerns of indigenous representatives often appear less radical than those of political representatives of nation-states or actors from other social strata in Latin America. In particular, when evaluating the importance of collections, indigenous people sometimes emphasize other aspects. In addition to the social and political frame for indigenous communities on the national and international stage, the quality of relationships with the persons involved in the production of a collection and the significance of cultural subjects against the background of local indigenous philosophies seem to be important factors. The examples reflect finally on the question of what weight is given to indigenous voices and perspectives in questions of whose cultural heritage is at stake: Cultural heritage of humanity, of a nation-state, of a local indigenous community, or of a family.
