Ethnography, Conviviality and Listening in a World Characterized by Disruptions
The political, social, economic, and technological changes that have taken place in the last decade have provided unprecedented opportunities for anthropologists to understand and explain humanity in new ways. What with technological advances that have increased Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and e-connectivity, new nationalist sentiments that resulted in Brexit, Trump’s presidency, and the rise of far-right parties in many European countries, and the Covid-19 pandemic that disrupted social, medical, economic, and political practices previously taken for granted. Convinced that all these changes have amplified the need for “boutique” studies best offered by ethnographic research, this talk invites anthropologists to step up to the challenge and guide individuals, communities and societies for a world that is more convivial through their studies. Such guidance, I will argue will require an anthropology centered on listening and conviviality.
