Human Conditions: On Disability and Christianity in Uganda
Nowadays the human is, at least in some circles, taken to be a bad idea: the very notion of “humanity” is increasingly blamed for catastrophic environmental devastation and mass violence, as well as criticized as an impediment to efforts at understanding collective life in more-than-human worlds. This talk challenges such a line of thinking. It draws upon ethnography alongside disabled people in Uganda to sketch some ways of thinking and being “human” differently. It argues that humanity per se is, in fact, not a bad idea, but only certain overly narrow visions of the human are.
