Abstract
Sandra Staudacher conducted her dissertation research ‘Cosmopolitan Aging in Zanzibar: Elderhood, Health and Transnational Care from Oman' in the Swiss National Science Foundation funded project ‘Ageing, Agency and Health in Urbanizing Tanzania’ lead by Prof. Brigit Obrist. Sandra Staudacher wrote a PhD thesis on how people at the age of sixty years and above organize and practice their living and care arrangements in a changing urban and transnational Swahili society in the city of Zanzibar, Tanzania and within transnational spaces of aging and care they share with relatives in Muscat, Oman, as well as all over the world. The study aimed at examining forms of agency in response to diverse health situations in everyday life of elderly people in urban areas and analyzes gendered aspects of aging and health in a predominantly Islamic context.
