Men´s meeting places in Volkspark Hasenheide, Berlin. An anthropological study. (MA thesis)

Presentation by Lina Noll, University of Basel

The study draws on qualitative research conducted at four meeting places in a park in Berlin- Neukölln, a district characterized by social diversity. The places -a public skateboard ground, a basketball court, a place at a hedge and one under a group of trees- are tied to groups of men, which meet there daily.

Investigations of bodily practices, history of the meeting places, different masculinities and citizenship-space relations serve to describe existing power relations. The ethnographic tool of reflexivity plays a greater role in this study in order to shed light on the limits and possibilities of data collection in the face of vulnerabilities on both sides, that of the agents of the study and that of the female researcher.
