Youth and migration in Guinea. Some reflections on a research project.

Presentation by Dr. Michelle Engeler, University of Basel

e

In this presentation I aim at sharing some insights into the research project MIGCHOICE, set out to ask how and to what extend development interventions affect people’s migration aspirations, decisions, and movement, focusing in particular on three countries in West Africa; Senegal, The Gambia and Guinea. After presenting some more general reflections from the research consortium on migration choices, uncertainty and alternative futures I will talk about youth and migration in Ratoma, one of the five urban communes of Conakry, the capital city of Guinea. Here, I relate the qualitative data we collected in early 2020 to what we later framed as ‘misty atmospheres of going’, strongly shaping the rhythm of being young in Conakry. Finally, and after presenting further nuances on youth and migration in Guinea, my presentation relates to accompanied fieldwork. Thus, I’d like to highlight that this research project was accompanied by addressing research collaboration partners, family members and the intertwinement of work and family life more broadly.
