Shula finds her uncle’s dead body in the middle of the road. As the turbulent funeral preparations and ceremonial lamentations unfold, familial structures of sexualized violence and generational divides become apparent. With satirical tragedy, Rungano Nyoni stages the drama of a Zambian middle-class family and unpacks the complexity of resistance against entrenched social power structures. The feature film’s oppressive silence causes discomfort and is difficult to watch at times, but is precisely for this reason a thrilling postcolonial family drama. It won an award at Cannes in 2024.

Followed by a discussion with Sonja Merten (Swiss TPH) and a response by Claudine Rakotomanana, facilitated by Serena O. Dankwa.

The event is organised in collaboration with IAMANEH.
