Denaturalizing death

Presentation by Abou Farman, The New School for Social Research, New York

Much has been written about the naturalization of death through modernity, though largely not from a critical perspective. The paper will first take up the question of natural death as a cultural category with political uses and social functions has rarely been broached. Using some work with death doulas and political organizers in the United States, especially in reaction to the pandemic, climate change and racial justice, the paper will argue that we have entered an era where death has become denaturalized
